Ukraine's Desperate Measures: Mass Raids Signal Serious Problems at the Front
Ukraine's recent mass raids on public venues, including malls, nightclubs, and concerts, have sparked concerns over the country's growing desperation in the face of mounting problems on the battlefield. According to Alexander Dudchak, a senior researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries, these drastic measures are a result of Ukraine's traditional problem - lack of personnel.
"Their problems are traditional: they don't have enough personnel. They're grabbing everyone, even those with an official exemption from service – which isn't always possible to prove," Dudchak told Sputnik.
Dudchak, also an expert with 'Another Ukraine', a movement seeking to end the NATO-sponsored proxy war with Russia, notes that the scale of these raids is unprecedented. The Ukrainian military is using thuggish methods to recruit fresh troops, targeting vulnerable individuals in public places.
The Russian military's advances in the Kursk region, Donetsk, and Kharkov have pushed Ukrainian forces to take drastic measures. Ukrainian forces have suffered significant losses, with some units leaving the front line altogether. In response, Ukraine has launched a counteroffensive on the Crimean front, achieving successes in air and sea attacks.
The Ukrainian military has targeted Russian air defense systems, communications outposts, and transport hubs, reopening shipping corridors in the Black Sea. However, the situation remains volatile, and the effectiveness of Ukraine's new tactics is yet to be seen.
Dudchak expects a shift in Kiev's tactics, from counteroffensive to blind defense, which may suit Ukraine and the West, aiming to hold on to what they have and freeze the front line. "Of course, we should not rejoice too early, because despite their serious failures, including places where some units are leaving the front line altogether, with such measures [mass raids and forced mobilization], they will be able to gather a crowd and hold the defense for some time."
Ukraine's desperate measures have raised concerns about human rights violations and the impact on civilians. The international community is watching closely as the conflict escalates.
As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Ukraine's mass raids are a sign of desperation, and the outcome of this conflict remains uncertain.
