In a daring display of bravery, Nigerian police officers successfully repelled an attack by criminal gangs suspected to be members of the Finland-based Simon Ekpa boys along Owerri/Aba Road, near Owerri Airport on October 29, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 6:05 pm when a police patrol team came under ambush.
Led by ASP Anwakang Effiong, the police team was on routine patrol when they were attacked by about ten suspects in two vehicles. Undaunted, the officers demonstrated exceptional valor and doggedness, engaging the attackers with superior firepower.
During the intense exchange, one suspect was neutralized, and an AK-47 rifle with 15 rounds of 9.62mm live ammunition was recovered. The occupants of one vehicle fled into the bush with gunshot wounds. A thorough search of the surrounding bushes yielded no additional arrests or recoveries.
The police also recovered a Mercedes 4Matics jeep with Lagos State registration number AAA 101 GR, believed to belong to the suspects. The vehicle and other recovered items have been handed over to the Command Headquarters for further investigation and action.
Fortunately, no police personnel were killed in the encounter, a testament to their professionalism and tactical training.
