Nigeria's Human Rights Crisis Deepens: Northern Forum Demands Justice for Detained, Tortured Minors

The Arewa Broadcast Media Practitioners' Forum has joined the chorus of outrage over the detention and mistreatment of minors linked to the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. The organization condemned the "irresponsible act of inhumanity" perpetrated by security forces, labeling it a stain on Nigeria's national consciousness .

Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Yelwa emphasized that the protesters' only crime was exercising their constitutional right to protest. He criticized the government's revelation about uncovering protest sponsors, calling the prosecution of these minors "laughable" and "tragic". Yelwa urged the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable for the detention and mistreatment of these children.

Nigeria's human rights record has been marred by incidents of violence, abuse, and disregard for the rule of law. The country has struggled with election-related violence, Boko Haram's insurgency, and economic inequality.

The Northern Forum's call to action echoes the sentiments of many Nigerians: it's time for the government to prioritize justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights. The organization demanded the immediate release of the 76 detainees and ensuring their safety and well-being. They also called for the four juveniles who collapsed in court to receive medical attention in Paris or London.

Furthermore, the Forum urged the government to address the root causes of the agitation and ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected. They emphasized the need for the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that the judiciary is independent and impartial.

As Nigeria grapples with its human rights crisis, the international community watches with growing concern. The government must take concrete steps to address these issues and ensure that the rights of all Nigerians are respected and protected.
