President Bola Tinubu's government has come under intense scrutiny for its lopsided security appointments, sparking widespread criticism from Nigerians. A breakdown of the heads of security agencies reveals a glaring imbalance, with only one Igbo person appointed to head one of Nigeria's 22 security agencies .
The South-East geopolitical zone, predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people, has been vocal about feeling marginalized in governance. This latest development has further fueled the clamor for secession. Meanwhile, the oil-rich South-South region, responsible for Nigeria's wealth, has also been marginalized with only one appointment.
In contrast, the North-Central region received four appointments, North-East got three, and the South-West, Tinubu's home region, secured five appointments. The North-West dominated the security agencies with eight appointments.
- _North-West_: 8 appointments
- _South-West_: 5 appointments
- _North-Central_: 4 appointments
- _North-East_: 3 appointments
- _South-South_: 1 appointment
- _South-East_: 1 appointment
Sunday Dare, Tinubu's media aide, attempted to defend the appointments, stating that the facts do not support claims of favoritism towards the South-West. However, Nigerians on social media have vehemently disagreed, calling out the government for its blatant disregard for regional balance.
Critics argue that this imbalance undermines national unity and perpetuates marginalization. "Out of 22 appointments, SS and SE got one each, and you have the guts to defend it. You are truly shameless," said @improjectP on X. Another user, @OfficialEdoOsasB, added, "South-South that feeds the nation one appointment."
As tensions rise, Tinubu's government faces mounting pressure to address these concerns and promote inclusivity in its appointments. The president must demonstrate a commitment to national unity and fairness, ensuring that all regions are adequately represented in key positions.
