NEW ERA OF JUSTICE: Governor Peter Mbah Unveils West Africa's Most Advanced University-Led Forensic Hub in Enugu
ENUGU, NIGERIA — In a historic milestone destined to revolutionize the criminal justice system and security infrastructure across West Africa, the Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has officially commissioned the nation’s first university-led Centre for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CeDFoCI).
Housed at the Ugwuomu-Nike campus of Godfrey Okoye University, the state-of-the-art facility represents a powerhouse tripartite alliance between the Enugu State Government, Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), and the DNA Learning Centre Nigeria. By shifting the baseline of local prosecutions from speculation to empirical science, the facility is positioned to permanently alter how severe crimes are investigated across the nation.
"Every Crime Scene Leaves a Trace"Speaking at the grand unveiling ceremony, Governor Peter Mbah delivered a stern, uncompromising warning to criminal elements operating within the region. "To the criminals, I say this: every crime scene leaves a trace. And we can now track that trace and use it as evidence against you. For too long, many crimes have gone unresolved because the tools did not exist to capture and prosecute you. Now they do. There is no more hiding place."
Governor Mbah categorized the repository as a pivotal investment in the state’s security architecture, aligning directly with his administration's Citizens’ Charter. He emphasized that the introduction of world-class automated equipment would ensure rapid, indisputable forensic results on Nigerian soil, eradicating the archaic and costly reliance on exporting biological samples abroad for testing.
Top Judicial and Police Brass Affirm National ImpactThe commissioning attracted heavyweights from Nigeria's legal and law enforcement sectors, who lauded the initiative as a profound contribution to national security: The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) & Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN): Stated that CeDFoCI elevates Enugu and Nigeria into the tier of advanced jurisdictions that seamlessly integrate forensic intelligence into justice administration.
He noted it will provide prosecutors with unassailable scientific proof to secure just convictions in court. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu: Declared the centre a monumental asset for the Nigeria Police Force.
IGP Disu confirmed that the facility will strengthen police capabilities to crack down heavily on grave crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, human trafficking, and sexual offenses.
KEY CAPABILITIES OF THE NEW FACILITY
• Forensic DNA Profiling & Kinship Analysis
• Molecular Diagnostics & Pathogen Tracking
• Public Health Genomics & Outbreak Surveillance
• Civil Disputes (Definitive Maternity/Paternity)
• Regional Training Hub for Law Enforcement & Scholars
With advanced forensics now active in Enugu, Governor Mbah noted that the state must undergo a cultural shift regarding how citizens interact with crime scenes.
He passionately cautioned the public against tampering with areas where a crime has just occurred.
"Henceforth, when crimes occur, keep a safe distance, promptly alert the authorities, and allow trained professionals to carry out their work," Mbah instructed. "Every footprint, fingerprint, strand of hair, blood sample, or biological trace may contain crucial evidence. Once contaminated, such evidence may be lost." Led by Founding Director Prof. George Ude and GOUNI Vice Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, CeDFoCI is set to be manned predominantly by brilliant young Nigerian scholars under the age of 40, cementing Enugu’s growing reputation as the undisputed capital of innovation-driven governance and technological advancement in Nigeria.
