"Bloodshed in Plateau: Five Lives Lost in Latest Attack Amidst Escalating Violence"
A devastating attack on rural communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State has left five people dead, marking the latest tragedy in a series of bloody assaults that have plagued the region. The attack, which occurred on Monday, October 14, was confirmed by the Chairman of Bokkos Cultural Development Council, Farmasum Fuddang, and the Secretary, Duwam Bosco.
Eyewitnesses identified the perpetrators as members of the Fulani tribe, who launched a brutal attack on the village of Rafut in the Kwatas district shortly after 7 pm. Four young men guarding their family's home were ambushed and killed, while an elderly man was also murdered as the attackers stormed the compound.
This tragic incident is part of a larger pattern of violence that has claimed numerous lives in the past week. Over 10 community members were brutally murdered in separate attacks on October 7th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. The previous month also saw multiple assaults, resulting in six fatalities in Daffo on September 3rd, two in Tarangol on the same day, five in Mbar on September 16th, and two in Kop Mandarken on September 20th, 2024.
The Bokkos Cultural Development Council has commended security agencies for repelling the assailants and rescuing Yelwa Sunday Mashat, who is recovering from severe injuries. However, they expressed deep regret that the attack occurred despite warnings identifying the area as high-risk. The council also criticized the failure to apprehend identified suspects, who remain at large.
The council urged security agencies to collaborate more closely with locals to secure the community. "More worrisome is the fact that it occurred mere hours after residents of Rafut reached out to police authorities reporting suspicious activity by Fulani groups in the area," they stated.
Notably, similar incidents have occurred in the region, including the Wumat attack that claimed five lives on October 7th, the Kuba attack that killed four on October 10th, and the Maikatako attack that resulted in one fatality on October 11th. Previous attacks in Daffo, Tarangol, Mbar, and Kop Mandarken have also left multiple victims in their wake.
As the people of Plateau State mourn the loss of innocent lives, the international community is called upon to condemn these senseless attacks and support efforts to bring peace and security to the region.
The ongoing violence has sparked widespread concern, with many calling for increased action to protect vulnerable communities. As the investigation into the latest attack continues, residents remain on high alert, fearing further violence.
