ENUGU EAST AT A CROSSROADS: CAN PRINCESS ADA OGBU BRING A NEW STANDARD OF REPRESENTATION?

Enugu East Senatorial District occupies a unique place in the political and historical story of the Southeast. It includes Enugu North, Enugu South, Enugu East, Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East and Nkanu West, and has produced some of the most prominent political figures in Enugu State.

Yet, alongside this history and political importance is a question that deserves serious public discussion: has the people of Enugu East received the quality of legislative representation and development they deserve?

For many communities across the district, particularly rural communities, challenges such as electricity, roads, water, employment opportunities, healthcare and other basic infrastructure remain persistent concerns.

The history of the senatorial seat since 1999 has included prominent names such as Jim Nwobodo, Ken Nnamani, Chimaroke Nnamani, Gilbert Nnaji and Kelvin Chukwu. Ken Nnamani served as President of the Senate during the Fifth National Assembly, while Gilbert Nnaji served multiple terms representing the district.

The political history has also been marked by intense contests and disagreements. Indeed, contemporary reporting has described Enugu East as one of the most politically competitive senatorial districts in the state.

Against this background, the emergence of Princess Ada Ogbu Nara Unateze on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presents another opportunity for voters to examine what kind of representation they want going forward.

Princess Ada Ogbu is being presented by her supporters as a woman with the intellectual capacity, courage, competence and understanding required to provide a different approach to legislative representation. She is also being positioned as a significant female voice in a political environment where women remain underrepresented in elective federal positions.

Her candidacy therefore raises broader questions beyond party politics:

What should a senator from Enugu East actually deliver?

Is representation merely about occupying a seat in Abuja?

Or should the office involve consistently speaking for the people, sponsoring meaningful legislation, attracting federal projects, demanding accountability, maintaining regular contact with constituents and ensuring that neglected communities are heard?

For communities and other rural areas that continue to raise concerns about basic infrastructure, these questions are not abstract political arguments. They affect everyday life.

The forthcoming election should therefore be viewed as an opportunity for Ndi Enugu East to examine every candidate carefully  their background, competence, experience, character, legislative understanding, policy proposals and capacity to represent the entire district.

Princess Ada Ogbu's candidacy has already generated conversations about whether Enugu East is ready for a stronger female voice and a different model of representation.

But ultimately, the responsibility belongs to the electorate.

Enugu East deserves representation that is visible, accountable, accessible and development-focused.

The people should ask every candidate one simple question:

“What exactly will you do differently for Enugu East?”

The answer to that question  backed by competence, character, credible plans and measurable commitments  should guide the people's decision at the ballot.

The future of Enugu East should be decided by informed citizens, not political slogans.
