BREAKING: Appeal Court Nullifies MC Oluomo's Election as NURTW President

In a dramatic turn of events, the Court of Appeal has invalidated the election of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The ruling, delivered on November 8, 2024, also reaffirmed Tajudeen Baruwa as the rightful National President of the union.

MC Oluomo, a close ally of President Bola Tinubu, had been elected as the new National President during the Quadrennial Delegate Conference held at the union's Zonal Secretariat in Osogbo, Osun State, last week. However, the appellate court's unanimous judgement has overturned this decision, citing that it disregards previous rulings by the National Industrial Court and Court of Appeal, which had affirmed Baruwa as the legitimate leader.

The Appeal Court judges, Justice Hamma Akawu Barka, Justice Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba, and Justice Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi, dismissed the appellants' appeal and imposed a ₦100,000 fine on them. The judgement emphasized that MC Oluomo's inauguration as National President was devoid of merit and thus dismissed.

Baruwa's lawyer, Mr. Tolu Babaleye, had earlier argued that MC Oluomo's election was illegitimate, stressing that his client remained the rightful leader of the NURTW. With this latest ruling, Baruwa's position as National President has been reaffirmed. MC Oluomo's election nullification means he is no longer recognized as the NURTW National President, and Tajudeen Baruwa is now confirmed to lead the union.

This development is expected to have significant implications for the NURTW and its members, as well as the broader political landscape in Nigeria. The controversy surrounding MC Oluomo's election and subsequent nullification highlights the ongoing challenges and power struggles within the union.
