_Breaking News: Cross River Police Arrest Six Ambazonian Separatists_
In a significant breakthrough, the Cross River State Police Command has apprehended six suspected Ambazonian separatists who infiltrated Akamkpa Local Government Area. The arrest was confirmed by DSP Ewa Igri, the command's spokesperson, in Calabar on Saturday.
The Ambazonian separatists, seeking independence from Cameroon, have been engaged in an armed conflict with the Cameroonian military since 2017, known as the Anglophone Crisis. Their goal is to establish Ambazonia as a separate state, comprising the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon.
According to DSP Igri, the suspected separatists, aged between 18 and 36, were arrested following intelligence information and a tip-off, which led to the confession of three individuals and the subsequent arrest of three more.
During the operation, the police recovered various items, including one GPMG machine gun, one Ak-47 rifle, three empty magazines, and five empty G3 magazines. Additionally, improvised explosives devices, charms, flags, and an Amazonian army stamp were seized.
DSP Igri described the arrest as a significant achievement for the law enforcement agency, highlighting the command's commitment to maintaining security and preventing the spread of separatist activities in the state.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for diligent prosecution.
The Anglophone Crisis has resulted in significant human suffering, with over 6,000 civilians killed and 700,000 internally displaced, as well as 63,800 refugees in Nigeria. The conflict has also led to reports of war crimes committed by both Cameroonian forces and separatist groups.
The international community continues to monitor the situation, calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The arrest of the six suspected Ambazonian separatists in Cross River State is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address the crisis.
As the situation unfolds, concerns about regional stability and security remain paramount. The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism and separatism, while promoting peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries.
In the face of these challenges, the Cross River State Police Command's successful operation serves as a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in combating security threats.
