Brigadier-General Feared Abducted As ISWAP Ambushes Nigerian Army Convoy
Tension has gripped parts of Borno State after fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a deadly ambush on a Nigerian Army convoy late Friday night, killing several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and reportedly abducting a serving Brigadier-General.
The attackers, described as heavily armed and tactically coordinated, struck the convoy in what security sources say is one of the boldest assaults in recent months. The operation, carried out under the cover of darkness, left multiple casualties and sent shockwaves across nearby communities.
According to HumAngle, the insurgents not only overpowered the troops but also captured a Brigade Commander and other military personnel during the attack — a development that, if officially confirmed, would mark the first time a Nigerian General has been seized directly from an active frontline operation.
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army has not issued an official statement on the incident or clarified the condition of the abducted officer.
The latest attack comes amid rising concerns over renewed terrorist activities in Borno South. Senator Ali Ndume, who represents the district under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has decried the surge in violence, describing it as “deeply worrisome” and unacceptable.
Ndume revealed that four farmers were brutally murdered this week by Boko Haram fighters while harvesting their crops in Kwam village, near the Dille community in Askira-Uba Local Government Area. According to him, the killings reflect the worsening security challenges faced by remote communities despite years of military operations in the region.
“I am very much perturbed over the renewed attacks by Boko Haram terrorists in some parts of my constituency in the last week. These attacks led to the killing of four farmers while harvesting their crops in Kwam village,” he said.
The senator added that the violence is not isolated. He recalled the burning of a church and other structures in Pemi the previous week, as well as fresh reports of another Boko Haram incursion in Shikarkir, Chibok Local Government Area, on Wednesday.
Ndume criticised the persistent lack of sustained security presence in these vulnerable communities, warning that the gap has emboldened insurgents to strike repeatedly without resistance.
The situation remains fluid as security operatives intensify surveillance while residents brace for potential further attacks.
