_Cholera Outbreak Hits Niger State: 289 Cases, 17 Deaths Recorded_

A cholera outbreak has swept through Niger State, Nigeria, claiming 17 lives and infecting 289 people across 11 local government areas. Nine people are currently hospitalized, struggling to recover from the deadly disease.

Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Health, Bello Tukur, revealed the alarming figures while addressing the Niger State House of Assembly. Tukur assured that a dedicated committee has been established to tackle the outbreak and efforts are underway to coordinate actions across primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare sectors.

To combat the spread of cholera, the state is leveraging technical expertise and strategic planning to enhance its epidemic preparedness. This proactive approach aligns with the World Health Organization's (WHO) global strategy for cholera prevention and control, which aims to reduce cholera morbidity and mortality by addressing poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).

Pharmacist Umar Nasiru, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Primary and Secondary Health, emphasized the crucial role individuals play in preventing the spread of cholera. He urged the public to avoid open defecation, properly dispose of waste, boil water from unknown sources, and seek medical attention for diarrhea symptoms instead of self-medicating.

Nasiru's warnings echo the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control's (NCDC) guidelines for cholera prevention. The NCDC has reported cholera cases in multiple states, with Niger and Adamawa being the latest additions.

The Nigerian government, along with international organizations like UNICEF, is supporting emergency response efforts in affected regions. The WHO Country Office is collaborating with the Nigerian government to ensure timely and effective responses to the cholera outbreak.

As the situation unfolds, healthcare professionals are working tirelessly to contain the outbreak. The Niger State Government has intensified efforts to provide adequate healthcare services, including establishment of cholera treatment centers and distribution of medical supplies.

The cholera outbreak has raised concerns about the state of water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure in Niger State. Experts stress the need for long-term solutions to address these underlying issues and prevent future outbreaks.

With the combined efforts of government agencies, healthcare professionals, and international organizations, Niger State and Nigeria as a whole are working to combat the cholera outbreak and protect the lives of citizens.
