A devastating gas explosion rocked the Good Shepherd Catering School in Orokeonuoha Community, Ebonyi Local Government Area, on Thursday, leaving 10 students severely burned. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the tragic incident, according to the Ebonyi State Police Command.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, described the incident as "very unfortunate" and confirmed that the victims were taken to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for treatment. The students, aged 12-19, were in class when the explosion occurred, allegedly caused by a cooking gas cylinder in the school's kitchen.

The incident occurred on Thursday at the Good Shepherd Catering School, located in Orokeonuoha Community, Ebonyi Local Government Area. Authorities have confirmed that 10 students sustained varying degrees of burns, but thankfully, no fatalities were reported.

The Ebonyi Fire Service, however, did not receive reports of the explosion and therefore did not intervene. State Chief Fire Officer Ralph Ibiam expressed sympathy for the victims and emphasized the importance of safety precautions to prevent such incidents. "Gas explosions are becoming a trend in the state," he warned, advising the public to avoid taking phone calls near fuel stations, kitchens, or electrical appliances.

"It's crucial to be cautious when handling gas cylinders and electrical equipment," Ibiam added. "We urge the public to report any incidents or potential hazards to authorities immediately." Ibiam also highlighted the dangers of fire, noting that it "moves like a wave," making it essential to take preventive measures.

As the investigation continues, the community remains shaken by the incident. The police and fire service are working together to ensure that measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Ebonyi State Government has been urged to provide support to the affected students and their families. The incident has sparked concerns about safety standards in schools and public institutions, with calls for regular inspections and maintenance of gas and electrical equipment.

The police and other relevant agencies are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine its cause and prevent future occurrences.

For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured students and ensuring that such incidents do not happen again. The community and authorities are working together to provide support and implement measures to prevent future tragedies.
