In a sweeping operation, a joint security team in Abuja has detained 34 individuals, comprising 15 beggars and 19 scavengers, following a ministerial directive ordering them to vacate the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The arrested individuals will be transferred to a rehabilitation center for vocational training, with the goal of empowering them with skills to improve their socio-economic circumstances.
The operation, described as a "national assignment" by Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, involved personnel from various agencies, including the Police, Military, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Disu emphasized the importance of professionalism and firmness in enforcing the ministerial orders, noting that the operation will last for two weeks, with an assessment of achievements to determine if further action is needed.
The FCT Administration's Director of Security, Adamu Gwary, revealed that Abuja has been divided into four zones to ensure maximum impact. These zones cover key city areas, including the metro, airport road, Kubwa axis, and Asokoro. Despite many beggars going into hiding, the task force successfully apprehended 34 individuals.
Kaka Bello, Head of Enforcement at the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, clarified that the operation's scope extends beyond beggars, aiming to rid the city of all nuisances. Dr. Sani Rabe, Director of Social Welfare, explained that detainees will be profiled at the rehabilitation center, where they can acquire skills for empowerment. However, those unwilling to participate in the training will be returned to their home states.
This operation underscores the FCT Administration's commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly environment in Abuja. The rehabilitation program is a crucial step towards addressing the root causes of begging and scavenging, providing individuals with a chance to rebuild their lives.
