GUNMEN STRIKE ENUGU: Community Leaders Killed in Brutal Attack

Tragedy struck in Amafor Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government, Enugu State, Nigeria, yesterday, as the Town Union President, Sir Dom, and some members of his executives were reportedly killed by unknown gunmen. The incident occurred during a meeting called by the President at the Amagu Ugbawka Town Hall.

According to eyewitnesses, the meeting was underway when the gunmen stormed the venue, opening fire and leaving multiple casualties. The motives behind the attack remain unclear.

This incident is the latest in a disturbing trend of assassinations targeting top leaders and businesspeople in Enugu State. Within the past six months, over seven prominent business leaders and politicians have been murdered without any perpetrators being brought to justice.

Just two weeks ago, the Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association (OMATA) was killed in a similar manner in Enugu South LGA. Additionally, Hon. Ejike Ugwueze, a prospective Local Government candidate in Isiuzor LGA, suffered the same fate. All these incidents have occurred within the Enugu East Senatorial zone, leaving the community on edge.

The incident took place on October 6, 2024, at 2 pm. The police spokesperson in Enugu State, ASP Ndukwu, has yet to confirm the incident.

The community is in shock, and authorities are urged to investigate the incident promptly and bring the perpetrators to justice. The Enugu State Government has been called upon to provide adequate security measures to prevent future attacks.

A video shared with Glintnews reporters by a community member shows the aftermath of the attack, but the authenticity of the footage has not been verified.

As the investigation unfolds, concerns about the safety of community leaders and the rising incidence of violence in the region are growing. The Nigerian government is under pressure to address the security challenges facing the country.
