Welcome To Glint News.....
As the world marks World Teachers Day today, October 5, 2024 ¹, the National Youth Alliance (NYA) Imo State chapter is drawing attention to the dire situation of Imo teachers who have gone without salaries for over 15 months. Despite the celebrations, the harsh reality of unpaid salaries and exploitation hangs over these dedicated educators.
The current administration, led by Chief Hope Uzodimma, has been criticized for its handling of teacher salaries since taking office in January 2020. The decision to hire a contractor to manage salary payments has created divisions among workers, with some receiving half payments while others are left empty-handed.
This system has proven to be a conduit for corruption, with reports of workers being forced to pay a percentage of their salaries to data center managers to ensure their names remain on the payroll. The lack of transparency has resulted in workers being unsure of their monthly remuneration, with some receiving varying amounts from month to month.
NYA's Demands for Imo State Government:
- _Settle Outstanding Arrears_: Pay all owed salaries to Imo teachers.
- _Renovate Schools_: Upgrade primary and secondary schools for conducive learning environments.
- _Promote Deserving Teachers_: Give commensurate salary increases to qualified teachers.
- _Respect Imo NUT_: Stop interfering with the activities of the Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
- _Complete Teacher Recruitment_: Finish hiring more teachers, particularly Science teachers for secondary schools.
- _Recognize Excellence_: Encourage and reward Imo's best teachers in key subjects.
The NYA emphasizes that the minimum wage of N70,000 is non-negotiable for Imo teachers, considering their invaluable contributions to society. Today should serve as a call to action for the Imo government to address these pressing issues and motivate teachers to provide effective education and nurturing for the state's children.
As the world acknowledges the vital role teachers play, the NYA extends its gratitude to these unsung heroes. "If you can write your name, thank a teacher!" Happy World Teachers Day to all Imo teachers.
