Millions of Eligible Nigerian Youths to Register in INEC's Continuous Voter Registration Exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise today, August 18, 2025, in all 774 local government areas and state headquarters across Nigeria. This initiative aims to capture over 20 million eligible voters who have turned 18 since the 2023 election and those who have not previously registered.

The registration process will take place in 811 centers across the country, including local government offices and designated centers, from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Eligible citizens can register online through the CVR portal or visit any of the registration centers. Physical registration will commence on August 25, 2025, and will run simultaneously with online registration for a year until August 30, 2026.

To facilitate a seamless process, INEC has launched a feature on the CVR portal where voters can check the status of their voter cards, find the location of their designated pickup center, and locate the nearest registration centers for those not previously registered. The commission has also deployed an online CVR Live Locator to assist citizens in finding registration centers nationwide .

To register, citizens must provide proof of identity, age, and nationality. The registration process is open to those who have turned 18 years old after the last registration exercise or those who could not register previously. The registration centers will be open from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays .

However, many Nigerians, especially youths, seem to lack confidence in INEC due to past electoral manipulation. Over 20 million eligible voters are expected to register, but trust in the electoral umpire remains a significant challenge. Civil societies, including the Obidient movement, have urged Nigerians to register and protect their votes in the 2027 elections .

INEC assures Nigerians of a transparent and credible registration process. The commission has emphasized its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and fairness in the registration process. With the introduction of technological innovations, INEC aims to improve the voter registration exercise and make it more accessible to all eligible citizens .
