Nigeria's Senate Takes Historic Step :National Council for Traditional Rulers Bill Passes First Reading
The Nigerian Senate has made a groundbreaking move by passing the National Council for Traditional Rulers (Establishment) Bill, 2024 (SB 546), sponsored by Senator Simon Bako Lalong from Plateau South, for its first reading ¹. This significant development is expected to formalize the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria's governance structure, fostering collaboration and community engagement.
Traditional rulers have played a vital role in Nigeria's history, dating back to the pre-colonial era. They were the leaders of independent states and communities, commanding respect and influence within their domains. During the colonial era, the British tried to rule through these traditional rulers, but their power was eventually diminished.
The proposed National Council for Traditional Rulers will advise federal and state governments on traditional land disputes, development plans, and security matters. Additionally, it will evaluate and enhance traditional customs and usages, offer guidance on religious matters, promote arts and culture, assist in resolving boundary disputes, and mobilize resources for self-reliance and welfare.
This move is reminiscent of the National Assembly's efforts to vote on sixty-eight Constitution Alteration Bills in 2022, which aimed to strengthen good governance, devolution of powers, local government autonomy, and judicial reforms . The establishment of the National Council for Traditional Rulers is a significant step towards recognizing the importance of traditional institutions in promoting national unity and development.
By integrating traditional rulers into the national governance structure, Nigeria is taking a proactive approach to harnessing their wisdom and expertise. This development has the potential to positively impact the country's social, economic, and cultural landscape.
