New Leadership for ALGON: Bello Lawal Takes the Helm
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has elected Bello Lawal, Chairman of Kaita LGA in Katsina State, as its new president. This development follows the conclusion of Aminu Mua'zu Maifata's tenure as Executive Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.
Lawal's election took place at the National Executive Council meeting held in Lafia, Nasarawa state capital, where he expressed gratitude to the NEC members for entrusting him with the leadership role ¹. He pledged to build on the accomplishments of his predecessor, Maifata, and continue ALGON's advocacy for local government autonomy in Nigeria.
"I am deeply honored by this responsibility, and I assure you all that I will give my very best to further the cause of this great organization," Lawal said in his acceptance speech. He emphasized the importance of unity among members, stating, "With the support of every member, I am confident that we can push the objectives of ALGON to a desirable end, especially in the ongoing struggle for local government autonomy."
Lawal also appealed to all members to work together to achieve the shared vision of strengthening governance at the local level. Maifata, in his farewell speech, congratulated Lawal and urged ALGON members to extend their full support to the new leadership. He praised the NEC for conducting a peaceful and transparent election, expressing confidence in Lawal's ability to steer the association in the right direction.
Maifata stated, "I have no doubt that Bello Lawal will lead ALGON to greater heights. I call on all of you to give him the same cooperation you gave me during my tenure." With Lawal at the helm, ALGON is poised to continue its efforts in promoting efficient grassroots governance and effective partnerships with national, state, and international stakeholders.
