New Terror Threat Emerges in Nigeria: 'Lukarawas' Group Spreads Fear in North-West

A new terrorist group, known as 'Lukarawas', has emerged in Nigeria's North-west, further exacerbating the region's insecurity. The Defence Headquarters confirmed the group's presence, revealing that they originated in Niger after the recent coup, which disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger .

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, explained that the terrorists infiltrated northern areas of Sokoto and Kebbi States from Niger and Mali, exploiting difficult terrains and gaps in cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. Initially, locals welcomed the group, believing they had good intentions, but failed to report the movement to military and security agencies.

The Nigerian Police Force, Sokoto State Command, also confirmed the presence of the sect in five local government areas, including *Gudu*, **_Tangaza_, **_Binji_, *_Illela_*, and another unnamed area. The group, armed with sophisticated weapons, imposes its beliefs on the populace.

The emergence of 'Lukarawas' raises concerns about the growing terrorist presence in Nigeria's North-west. This region has suffered from intense, destabilizing conflict since 2015, resulting in thousands of deaths, displacement of over a million people, and the closure of hundreds of schools ¹.

Boko Haram's expansion into the North-west zone has also been reported, with attacks in Sokoto and Kaduna states ². The group's primary goal is to establish Shari'a law in Nigeria by force and dismantle the Nigerian government and its secular institutions.

As security forces work to eliminate the threat, the international community watches with bated breath. Will Nigeria's military be able to contain this new threat, or will 'Lukarawas' become another formidable force in the region?
