Nigeria Cracks Down on Drunk Driving: Reps Advocate Ban on Alcohol Sales in Motor Parks

In a bold move to curb the alarming rate of road accidents, the House of Representatives has resolved to ban the sale of alcohol and psychoactive drugs in and around motor parks across Nigeria. This decision was made after a motion was adopted, sponsored by Mr. Abbas Adigun, representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, Oyo State.

Citing a report by the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Adigun noted that a staggering 90% of road accidents in Nigeria are caused by the consumption of alcoholic drinks and hard drugs. The lawmaker emphasized that the consumption of these substances impairs driving coordination, judgment, and vision, leading to loss of life and property.

The House expressed concern that motor parks have become hubs for the sale of alcohol and illicit drugs, putting passengers' lives at risk. Drivers, often tempted by readily available alcohol and drugs at motor parks, endanger not only their own lives but also those of pedestrians.

To address this issue, the House urged federal, state, and local governments to immediately ban the sale of alcoholic drinks and other drug-related substances in and around motor parks. This prohibition aims to prevent drivers from accessing substances that impair their ability to operate vehicles safely.

Furthermore, the House tasked the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) with extending its services to motor parks to conduct random tests for drivers and ensure they are not under the influence. This measure will help identify and deter drivers who may be intoxicated or under the influence of substances.

Transport owners with private parks were also encouraged to discourage the sale of alcoholic drinks within their premises. This collaborative effort between government agencies, transport owners, and law enforcement is crucial in preventing accidents and saving lives.

Additionally, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency was directed to increase surveillance and prosecution of dealers and consumers of illicit drugs in motor parks. This intensified effort will help eradicate the illegal drug trade and reduce its impact on road safety.
