Nigeria's Continued Detention of Nnamdi Kanu Sparks International Outcry

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Nigerian government of violating court orders and detaining its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, since his arrest in Kenya and extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in June 2021. Despite favorable court rulings, Kanu remains in detention, sparking widespread concern over the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights.

Kanu's ordeal began when he was allegedly kidnapped by Nigerian authorities in collaboration with Kenyan police in Kenya, though Kenyan High Commissioner Wilfred Machage refutes this, challenging anyone to provide evidence. This incident has been widely condemned as an "illegal abduction and international gangsterism" by the World Igbo Congress.

The Nigerian government's handling of Kanu's case has been marred by controversy. Initially arrested in 2015, Kanu was granted bail but rearrested in 2021. His lawyers argue that the rearrest was unlawful, and the Abia State High Court ruled in January 2022 that Kanu's 2017 arrest was indeed unlawful and an infringement on his human rights.

The Appeal Court's October 2022 judgment highlighted the illegality of Kanu's rendition from Kenya, stressing that it was against all known international conventions and treaties. The court also noted that the federal government's actions "tainted the entire proceedings" and amounted to "an abuse of criminal prosecution in general."

Kanu's lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, argued that the remaining seven counts against Kanu cannot stand, as they were filed illegally without following due process under the rule of specialty as envisaged under section 15 of the Extradition Act.

The IPOB and Kanu's supporters demand his unconditional release, citing the government's failure to respect court judgments and uphold the rule of law. IPOB's Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, stated, "Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being persecuted, not prosecuted."

As the international community watches, Nigeria's handling of this case will undoubtedly have significant implications for its human rights record and international reputation. The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu has sparked international outrage, with many calling for his immediate release.
