The people of Nkerefi, a vibrant border town in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, are gearing up for their first-ever united New Yam Festival (Iri Iji), scheduled to take place on October 18, 2024. This momentous occasion promises to bring together all four autonomous communities in a celebration of gratitude, unity, and cultural heritage.

His Royal Highness Igwe Luke O. Okorie, Eze Anyaneche Oha 1 of Imeoha Nkerefi, will host the festival. As the longest-serving king among the autonomous communities, Igwe Okorie is revered as the traditional father of Nkerefi. His leadership and vision have been instrumental in promoting the town's development.

Preparations are underway to receive top dignitaries, including Enugu State Governor, His Excellency Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. Other notable guests include politicians, business leaders, and sons and daughters of Nkerefi returning from various parts of the country. Ambassador Chief Victor Chukwuogo, Chairman of the organizing committee, assured that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a successful event.

The New Yam Festival is a significant event in Nkerefi's cultural calendar, symbolizing gratitude for the harvest and seeking divine blessings for the coming year. The festival will feature traditional music, dance, and entertainment, including Ebe, Ikpa, Abia, and Igede performances.
