Obi Advocates for Transparency and Citizen Involvement in Nigeria's Tax Reforms

Nigeria's former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emphasized the need for transparency and citizen input in the country's proposed tax reforms. Obi, who represented the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, stressed that while tax reforms are necessary, they must be carried out with careful consideration and extensive public deliberation.

"The government should not be the sole beneficiary of tax reforms," Obi said. "A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully and contribute to policy-making." He further emphasized that public trust and inclusivity are crucial in building a participatory democracy.

Tax reform is a critical issue, and Nigeria's economic challenges, including declining oil revenues, necessitate a revamped tax system that promotes economic growth, improves revenue generation and ensures fairness. The proposed Tax Reform Bill aims to streamline tax processes, introduce new tax brackets, enhance tax compliance, attract foreign investment and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

To achieve effective tax reforms, Obi outlined the importance of robust public debate, transparency and inclusivity. He noted that the government must prioritize transparency in the reform process to build public trust. Extensive public deliberation will ensure diverse opinions and inputs, leading to a more comprehensive and equitable tax system.

Moreover, Obi stressed that tax reforms should consider the overall impacts on the nation and its component parts, not just government revenue. The government must sensitize the people and secure their buy-in for any policy change. Trust and legitimacy are the foundations of effective governance; without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail.

Obi concluded, "Let us prioritize transparency, deliberations and public engagement in charting the pathway forward. This is how we can build a truly participatory democracy, and a new Nigeria is possible." His call for transparency and citizen involvement serves as a reminder that tax reforms must prioritize the needs of all stakeholders, not just the government.

As Nigeria navigates its economic challenges, it is crucial that policymakers engage with citizens and consider their input to create a fair and effective tax system. By doing so, the country can promote economic growth, reduce inequality and ensure a sustainable future for all Nigerians.
