16th November 2025

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one suspect following a loud explosion that sparked panic in Owo, Owo Local Government Area, on Saturday.

The incident, which occurred close to a commercial bank, sent residents scampering for safety as thick smoke briefly filled the air. Shop owners hurriedly locked up their stores, fearing a possible coordinated attack.

In a statement on Sunday, Police spokesperson Olusola Ayanlade said preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a banger, not an improvised explosive device. He identified the arrested suspect as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu, a resident of Owo, who has already confessed to his involvement.

According to Ayanlade, Ojumu’s accomplice — the individual who allegedly ignited the banger — fled the scene and is currently on the run. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend him.

“As the festive season approaches, the Command will not tolerate acts capable of causing fear or threatening public safety,” Ayanlade warned.

He urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards during the yuletide period to prevent unruly behavior.

Residents were also advised to remain calm, stay alert, and promptly report any suspicious activity to security operatives.

Ayanlade added that the suspect in custody will be charged to court once investigations are concluded, assuring that the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
