Panic in Community as Suspected Bandits Kill Two, Rustle Cattle in Broad Daylight Attack

Nigeria 15 May 2026

Residents of Lakwaya village in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano state were thrown into panic on Thursday evening after heavily armed men suspected to be bandits invaded the community, killing two persons, injuring several others, and rustling cattle during a violent raid.

The attackers, who reportedly stormed the village in large numbers on motorcycles, unleashed terror on residents as gunshots echoed across the area, forcing villagers to flee for safety.

According to eyewitness accounts gathered by GLINTNEWS, the gunmen arrived in Lakwaya at about 4:00 p.m., riding on more than 30 motorcycles. The assailants were said to have entered the community from Gidan Biris, a border settlement between Kano State and Katsina State, before launching the deadly attack.

A traditional ruler in the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, described the incident as terrifying and chaotic, saying residents were caught completely off guard by the sudden invasion.

“The attackers came in large numbers and started shooting sporadically immediately they entered the village,” the traditional ruler said. “People began running in different directions for safety while others hid in their homes. The entire community was thrown into confusion.”

He confirmed that two people lost their lives during the attack — one in Lakwaya village and another in nearby Gidan Biris — while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries amid the gunfire.

The community leader disclosed that the attackers also rustled an unspecified number of cattle before security operatives arrived at the scene.

“Right now, as we are speaking with you, there is a clash going on. Soldiers have just arrived and are responding accordingly,” he said during a phone conversation. “As I am speaking with you now, I am standing beside the body of one of those killed.”

According to him, troops deployed to the area engaged the fleeing gunmen in a gun duel as efforts intensified to repel the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.

Residents said the sound of gunfire continued for several minutes as security forces pursued the assailants around surrounding bushes and border communities.

The attack has further heightened fears among residents of rural communities in northern Nigeria, many of whom have repeatedly complained about increasing cases of armed raids, cattle rustling, and killings linked to bandit activities.

Although no abduction was reported during Thursday’s invasion, locals expressed concern that the attack could signal a growing security threat around border communities connecting Kano and Katsina states.

A resident who narrowly escaped the attack said villagers are now living in fear and uncertainty.

“We are no longer safe. These attackers came in broad daylight and operated freely before soldiers arrived. People are scared because this is becoming too frequent,” the resident lamented.

The body of one of the victims was reportedly taken to the General Hospital in Gwarzo for examination before arrangements for burial commenced in line with Islamic rites after calm was restored in the community.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to obtain confirmation from military authorities and other security agencies proved unsuccessful.
