A widespread blackout has plunged several parts of Imo and Abia states into darkness, leaving thousands of residents without electricity. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has attributed the power outage to a disruption at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Alaoji Station.
According to Emeka Ezeh, EEDC's Head of Corporate Communications, the outage began at 7:45 am on Thursday, affecting customers in Imo State and parts of Umuahia, Abia State. The impacted areas include New Owerri, Owerri Urban, Owerri Rural, Orlu, Mbaise, and Umuahia districts.
While the exact cause of the disruption remains unknown to the EEDC, the company has apologized for the inconvenience and appealed for customers' understanding. "We sincerely regret the difficulties this situation has caused our valued customers and seek their patience as we await resolution of the issue to restore supply to our affected customers," Ezeh stated.
The TCN Alaoji Station is a critical transmission infrastructure serving the southeastern region of Nigeria. Disruptions at this station can have far-reaching consequences for electricity distribution in the area. The station's importance underscores the need for urgent attention to resolve the issue.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas have expressed frustration over the prolonged blackout. Chika Odili, a resident of Owerri, lamented, "This outage has severely impacted our daily lives and livelihoods. We urge the authorities to expedite the resolution process." The blackout's effects are being felt across various sectors, including healthcare, commerce, and security.
The prolonged blackout may lead to significant economic losses for businesses reliant on electricity, disruption of healthcare services and medical facilities, increased security concerns due to darkness, and inconvenience to residents, particularly during the hot season.
EEDC assures customers that efforts are underway to resolve the issue and restore power supply as soon as possible. The company will provide updates on the progress. EEDC and TCN officials are currently investigating the cause of the disruption, and repair works are ongoing.
Customers are advised to check the EEDC website and social media channels for updates. As the situation unfolds, the EEDC and TCN are under pressure to restore power supply and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
The EEDC has reiterated its commitment to providing reliable electricity services and appreciates customers' patience during this challenging period. The company is working tirelessly to ensure that power supply is restored to the affected areas.
