Tension in Lagos as Residents Allege Oworonshoki Youths Set Homes Ablaze, Issue 48-Hour Eviction Ultimatum

June 8, 2026

Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of a community near the Precious Seed area of Lagos State following allegations that a group of youths from Oworonshoki invaded the settlement, set homes on fire, and issued a 48-hour ultimatum for occupants to vacate the area.

The disturbing development has sparked panic among residents, many of whom now fear for their safety and the security of their properties as tensions continue to rise within the affected community.

A video obtained by local sources shows multiple structures engulfed in flames, with thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky as helpless residents watched their homes and belongings being consumed by the raging fire. The footage, which has since circulated widely, has triggered concerns about a possible humanitarian crisis if urgent intervention is not undertaken.

According to an audio message circulating among residents,  members of the community were allegedly warned to leave the area within 48 hours or face further consequences.

The speaker, who identified himself as a concerned resident, described the situation as alarming and called for immediate intervention from government authorities, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the general public.

“Today is June 8, 2026. Right now, the community beside Precious Seed is being given 48 hours,” the resident said in the audio recording.

The source further alleged that individuals believed to be indigenes of Oworonshoki were directly involved in the demolition and burning of shelters within the community.

“As you can rightly see, the indigenes of Oworonshoki, led by a man identified as Nuru, are the ones burning people's shelters and destroying homes,” the source claimed.

Residents say the attacks have left many families displaced, with some scrambling to salvage whatever possessions they could rescue from the inferno. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos as men, women, and children fled the area amid fears that additional structures could be targeted.

The audio message also contained allegations that the actions were being carried out under instructions from traditional authorities within the Oworonshoki community. However, these claims have not been independently verified, and no evidence has yet been presented to support the accusation.

“The directive, according to what we have been told, came from the king of Oworonshoki,” the resident alleged.

The allegations have generated significant concern among community members, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and the circumstances surrounding the reported ultimatum.

Describing the perpetrators as “bandits within,” the resident warned that innocent people were being terrorised despite ongoing security challenges facing various parts of the country.

“Let everyone see that bandits are now within our communities. While Nigeria continues to battle insecurity, innocent residents are being terrorised and forced out of their homes. We are calling on everyone to come together and help us salvage this situation,” the resident appealed.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire incidents remains unclear, and there has been no official confirmation regarding the alleged eviction notice.

Neither the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Police Command, nor representatives of the Oworonshoki community had issued an official statement addressing the allegations. Authorities are also yet to provide details on whether investigations have commenced into the reported destruction of property.

The incident has nevertheless heightened concerns about land-related disputes, forced evictions, and communal tensions in parts of Lagos, where conflicts over ownership and occupation of land have occasionally resulted in violence and displacement.

Residents are now urging relevant authorities to intervene swiftly, investigate the allegations, and ensure the protection of lives and property before the situation escalates further.

With many families reportedly facing the prospect of homelessness, attention is increasingly turning to the Lagos State Government and security agencies to provide clarity on the incident and restore calm to the troubled community.
