President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt refinery, marking the official commencement of petroleum product loading. This milestone is a significant step towards achieving energy sufficiency and enhancing energy security in Nigeria.

Established in 1965, the Port Harcourt Refinery is one of Nigeria's major oil refining facilities, with an initial capacity of 38,000 barrels per day (bpd). However, the refinery faced numerous challenges, including aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and insufficient investments, leading to frequent shutdowns. The refinery's revitalization is a testament to the administration's commitment to repairing the nation's refineries.

The successful revitalization of the refinery is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria's economy, which has been plagued by scarcity of petroleum products, particularly premium motor spirit, diesel, and aviation kerosene. The refinery's operation will increase domestic production capacity, reduce reliance on imports, and potentially lower pump prices. The president commended the leadership of NNPC Limited's Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, whose dedication and commitment were instrumental in overcoming challenges to achieve the milestone.
