Tinubu's Government Urges Nigerians to Resist Crime Amidst Economic Hardship

The Nigerian government has appealed to its citizens to refrain from engaging in criminal activities despite the country's current economic challenges. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, made this plea at the fourth quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Nigeria is grappling with its worst cost of living crisis in nearly 30 years, with millions of people thrust into poverty. The removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Tinubu's administration has contributed to inflation surging to 34.19 percent, with food inflation exceeding 40 percent. This has led to widespread protests and public outrage.

Akume emphasized the urgent need to address the relationship between Nigeria's natural resources and insecurity. He stressed that poor management of resources has worsened economic and social insecurities. "It is crucial we manage our resources effectively to ensure peace and stability," Akume said.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assured NIREC of the police's commitment to partnering for peace and stability in Nigeria. "We are willing and ready to partner stakeholders to ensure we enjoy the natural resources entrusted to this country," he said. Egbetokun expressed hope for positive outcomes regarding natural resources and security.

The Executive Secretary of NIREC, Cornelius Omonokhua, noted that Nigeria's resources have been a source of pain instead of a blessing. "Our natural resources should be a blessing, not a curse," Omonokhua said.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa'ad Abubakar III, urged Nigerians to be steadfast in prayers, emphasizing that insecurity and natural resources have been a great challenge in the country. "We must work together to address these challenges," Abubakar said.

To address the economic hardship, the government must prioritize transparency and public engagement. Establishing clear policies for reinvesting subsidy savings in social programs and infrastructure is crucial. By involving citizens in policy discussions, the government can rebuild trust and work toward a more equitable future.

The meeting highlighted the need for collaborative efforts among religious leaders, government agencies, and civil society organizations to promote sustainability, security, and economic growth. As Nigeria navigates its current challenges, unity and collective action are essential for a brighter future.
