"Traders Cry Out: Enugu Mayor Market Harassment and Attacks Intensify"

Traders at Mayor Market in Enugu South are facing relentless harassment and attacks from thugs allegedly recruited by Local Government Chairman, Hon. Caleb Onyema Ani. The traders, in an emotional interview, recounted how they've been chased out, intimidated, and sometimes had their goods destroyed.

Mrs. Ijeoma Okoro, a trader, admitted that selling along the roadside isn't ideal, but the market's lack of space forces them to do so. "We know it's not perfect, but we have no choice," she said. Mr. Innocent Chukwu, a rice seller, shared his struggles after Gariki market's destruction and pleaded with the government to consider the economic hardships traders face.

Christana Ilo, another marketer, urged Chairman Ani to expand Mayor Market, highlighting its centrality to residents around Agbani road, Achara layout, and beyond. "This market serves thousands of people daily; expanding it would ease congestion and boost trade," she noted.

However, some traders suspect the government's actions are a ploy to extort money from them. Mr. Chinedu, a trader, recalled the previous administration's tactics, where sellers were forced to pay daily levies of ₦200 for roadside stalls and ₦300 for those inside. "We can't afford these levies; we're barely making ends meet," he appealed.

Mayor Market, situated opposite Mobile Police Barracks along Agbani road, is a hub for fruits, vegetables, food, and household items. Its busy evenings often cause heavy traffic. As tensions escalate, traders and residents await a resolution to this pressing issue.

To address the crisis, traders are calling for market expansion to provide more space for sellers. They also appeal to the government to consider their economic struggles and provide relief. Furthermore, traders demand protection from harassment and attacks, highlighting the need for effective security measures.

The Enugu South government must balance the need for order with the traders' right to earn a living. Chairman Ani's response will determine the fate of Mayor Market and its thousands of stakeholders. Will the government heed the traders' pleas, or will tensions continue to rise?

The situation at Mayor Market highlights the need for effective governance as many Civil Society groups has united and mounted Eagle eyes on all the Local Government Chairmen and their activities , trader support, and community engagement. As the stalemate persists, residents worry about the market's future and its impact on the local economy.
