NDLEA Raids Multi-Billion Naira Industrial Meth Lab, Mexican Experts, Local Accomplices Nabbed

June 24, 2026

Nigeria's anti-narcotics agency has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing war against illicit drugs, dismantling a sophisticated industrial-scale methamphetamine production facility allegedly operated by a transnational Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel deep inside a forest in Oyo State.

The operation, carried out by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), led to the arrest of a 56-year-old Mexican national believed to be a methamphetamine production expert, alongside four Nigerian collaborators suspected of playing key roles in the illegal enterprise. The agency described the facility as a multi-billion-naira clandestine laboratory capable of producing large quantities of synthetic drugs for both local consumption and international trafficking.

Forest Hideout Converted Into Drug Manufacturing Hub

According to NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), the laboratory was discovered in Tapa Village, located within the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State. Hidden deep within a forested area, the facility was designed to evade detection while operating on an industrial scale.

Investigators recovered an array of sophisticated equipment typically associated with large-scale methamphetamine production, including reactor pots, mounted distillation units, condensers, industrial mixers, and crystal-drying machines. The agency also seized drums containing chemical substances at different stages of synthesis, as well as finished methamphetamine crystals ready for distribution. Forensic analysis conducted on-site reportedly confirmed the presence of methamphetamine.

Marwa said the discovery highlights the growing determination of international drug syndicates to establish manufacturing bases within Nigeria rather than merely using the country as a transit route for narcotics.

Second Major Meth Lab Bust in One Month

The latest raid comes barely four weeks after the NDLEA dismantled what authorities described as the largest clandestine methamphetamine laboratory ever discovered in Nigeria. That operation, conducted in the Abidagba forest of Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, led to the arrest of three Mexican nationals, a suspected drug kingpin, and several Nigerian collaborators. Authorities recovered more than 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine and precursor chemicals valued at approximately ₦480 billion.

Security analysts say the back-to-back discoveries point to an emerging trend in which foreign drug cartels are increasingly partnering with local criminal networks to establish production facilities in remote parts of Nigeria. The involvement of foreign methamphetamine specialists has also raised concerns about the transfer of technical expertise to local criminal groups.

Growing International Dimension of Nigeria's Drug Challenge

The arrest of Mexican nationals in both the Ogun and Oyo operations underscores the international nature of the criminal networks involved. NDLEA officials believe the suspects were recruited for their expertise in large-scale methamphetamine production, a practice commonly associated with major transnational drug organisations.

Experts warn that West Africa is increasingly attracting international drug syndicates due to its strategic geographic location, expanding transportation networks, and access to international shipping routes. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has previously identified the region as a growing hub for both drug trafficking and illicit drug manufacturing.

NDLEA Vows Relentless Crackdown

Speaking after the operation, Marwa issued a stern warning to local and foreign drug traffickers, declaring that Nigeria would not become a safe haven for narcotics production.

He stated that the agency would continue to intensify intelligence gathering, surveillance, and coordinated operations aimed at dismantling drug cartels wherever they operate.

"They thought hiding in dense forests would shield them from the long arm of the law. They were wrong," Marwa said, stressing that NDLEA operatives would continue tracking criminal networks across the country.

Security and Public Health Concerns

Beyond its criminal implications, the proliferation of methamphetamine laboratories poses significant threats to public health and national security. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive synthetic stimulant linked to severe mental health disorders, violent behaviour, and long-term physical harm.

Security experts also warn that proceeds from illicit drug production often finance other forms of organised crime, including arms trafficking, kidnapping, money laundering, and cross-border criminal activities. The presence of sophisticated drug manufacturing networks within Nigeria has therefore become a major concern for law enforcement agencies and policymakers.

With two major industrial methamphetamine laboratories dismantled within a month, authorities say the recent operations demonstrate both the scale of the threat and the increasing effectiveness of intelligence-led enforcement efforts aimed at disrupting transnational criminal syndicates operating within Nigeria.
