Scientists Fast-Track Three Vaccines as Deadly, Rare Ebola Outbreak Escalates

Medical researchers are advancing three experimental vaccines to combat an uncommon strain of the Ebola virus that has claimed nearly 250 lives. Commenting on the crisis, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)—one of the organizations spearheading a vaccine candidate—warned that the ongoing surge could become the most severe on record.

Alongside IAVI, the University of Oxford and pharmaceutical giant Moderna are actively developing immunizations specifically targeting the Bundibugyo variant. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which is bankrolling all three initiatives, emphasized that "every day counts."

The crisis has intensified with suspected infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo crossing the 1,000 mark, while neighboring Uganda has recorded nine laboratory-confirmed cases.

Fears are mounting that this health crisis could rival the catastrophic 2014–2016 West African Ebola epidemic, which infected nearly 29,000 individuals and resulted in over 11,000 fatalities. The current outbreak went unnoticed until it had already taken root in an active conflict zone plagued by severely strained medical infrastructure.

"I think this is clearly threatening to be as severe an outbreak as that, if not even worse, and development of a vaccine, and other countermeasures, is clearly a priority," stated IAVI chief Dr. Mark Feinberg.

His warnings mirror anxieties raised by the medical humanitarian group Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The charity characterized the unfolding emergency as "deeply alarming," noting that the volume of cases documented in such a short window is entirely unprecedented
