Aviation Breach: NCAA Grounds Private Jet After Highway Landing and Illegal Takeoff

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has grounded a private aircraft and suspended its operator’s permit following an extraordinary sequence of events involving an unauthorized landing on a Delta State highway and a subsequent illegal takeoff. 

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s aviation sector, prompting an immediate high-level federal investigation.

At approximately 7:43 a.m. local time, the private aircraft was executing an approach to land at the Asaba International Airport. After performing a missed approach, the flight took an unprecedented turn. Rather than routing for a standard re-approach, the aircraft descended onto a concrete section of the Asaba–Ogwashi-Uku Expressway, which is currently under construction. 

Stunned motorists, residents, and passersby watched in disbelief as the aircraft came to a halt on the public roadway. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. All four crew members safely exited the aircraft and were transported to Asaba by road.

The controversy deepened hours later when the aircraft staged an unauthorized departure from the construction site. According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the aircraft took off directly from the expressway at approximately 11:02 GMT and headed back to Lagos. 

Air Traffic Control was only notified after the plane was already airborne, meaning the aircraft had absolutely no regulatory clearance to take off.

Minister Keyamo strongly condemned the actions as a severe violation of national security and aviation safety protocols. Upon the aircraft's arrival in Lagos, the NCAA and federal authorities immediately initiated strict enforcement actions. 

The plane was grounded pending a full inquiry, and the operator’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight was suspended. Furthermore, security agencies have taken custody of the crew for active interrogation while the NCAA conducts a comprehensive audit of all operational, maintenance, airworthiness, and flight records.

The NCAA is currently collaborating with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency and law enforcement to establish the full scope of the breach. 

Aviation experts note that this unprecedented event—being dubbed one of the most unusual incidents in recent Nigerian aviation history—could lead to drastic policy shifts and significantly stricter regulatory enforcement for private flight operators across the country.
