Bloodbath In Johannesburg: 12 Killed, Several Injured As Gunmen Unleash Terror In South African Informal Settlement
June 10, 2026
At least 12 people have been killed and nine others injured after heavily armed gunmen launched a deadly attack on a Johannesburg informal settlement, in what authorities have described as a brutal and heartless act of violence.
The late-night massacre occurred at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across South Africa and triggering an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators.
According to South African police, more than 10 armed suspects arrived in the area in a white Toyota Quantum before carrying out a coordinated assault on residents. The attackers reportedly entered the settlement through two separate access points and indiscriminately opened fire on people gathered at multiple locations.
The gunmen then fled the scene in the same vehicle, leaving behind a trail of death and devastation.
Police confirmed that eight men and three women died instantly during the attack, while another victim later succumbed to injuries in hospital, bringing the death toll to 12. Nine other victims who sustained gunshot wounds are currently receiving treatment at various medical facilities.
Authorities said officers responded to reports of an active shooting at approximately 11:10 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
In a statement, police revealed that the suspects were dropped off near a petrol station in Cleveland before making their way into the settlement.
“It is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland. The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle,” the statement said.
Law enforcement officials have condemned the killings, describing the attack as a barbaric act that targeted innocent residents. Investigators are currently working to establish the motive behind the shooting, although no arrests have yet been made.
The Jumpers informal settlement is located on the eastern outskirts of Johannesburg, an area that has long been associated with criminal activities and illegal mining operations. The region has witnessed recurring incidents of violent crime, often linked to disputes among criminal networks operating around abandoned mines.
Community members and local residents have speculated that the massacre may be connected to ongoing turf wars involving rival illegal mining groups, commonly known as “zama zamas.” However, police have cautioned against drawing conclusions at this stage, stressing that investigations are still underway.
The latest bloodshed once again highlights South Africa’s growing challenge with gun violence and organised crime. Mass shootings in informal settlements have become an alarming trend in parts of Johannesburg, where gang rivalries, territorial disputes, and criminal syndicates continue to fuel deadly violence.
As detectives pursue leads and hunt for the attackers, grieving families are left mourning loved ones killed in one of the deadliest mass shootings recorded in the city this year.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information about the incident to come forward, assuring that all tips will be treated confidentially.
The attack has reignited concerns about public safety and the proliferation of illegal firearms, with many South Africans calling for stronger security measures to curb the escalating wave of violent crime across the country.
