BLOODY AMBUSH IN ANAMBRA: Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers in Deadly Night Attack, Trigger Fear Across Communities

Awka, 1st June 2026

Residents of several communities in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into panic on Sunday night after unknown gunmen ambushed a team of police officers returning from official duty, killing two officers in a brazen attack along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road.

The deadly assault, which occurred under the cover of darkness, has once again raised concerns over security challenges in parts of the state, with residents calling for urgent measures to protect lives and property.

According to eyewitness accounts, the armed assailants had strategically positioned themselves in a nearby bush, waiting for the officers to approach before launching a surprise attack. The gunmen reportedly opened heavy fire on the police team, leaving two officers dead at the scene.

The sudden burst of gunfire sent shockwaves through nearby communities, forcing residents and road users to flee for safety as the attack unfolded.

One eyewitness, a commercial tricycle rider who regularly plies the route, recounted the terrifying experience. Speaking anonymously due to security concerns, he said he was returning from a trip to Ezira when the sound of gunshots shattered the night's calm.

“The incident happened last night. I was coming from a journey when I suddenly heard gunshots. The shooting was intense, and I immediately turned back to seek safety,” he said.

“After the shooting stopped, I continued my journey. When I got to the area where the attack happened, I saw two police officers lying lifeless on the road beside their patrol vehicle. It was a heartbreaking sight.”

Videos that later surfaced on social media showed the lifeless bodies of the officers lying beside their patrol van in pools of blood, while concerned residents called on security agencies to intervene and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The gruesome images quickly spread online, sparking outrage and renewed debate over the growing threat posed by armed criminal groups operating in parts of the Southeast.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the attack as a tragic loss to the command and assured residents that efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible.

According to the police commissioner, the officers were returning from an assignment when they came under unexpected attack from heavily armed men.

“A team of police officers was returning from an assignment when they were ambushed by armed men who opened fire on them. In the process, we lost two officers,” Orutugu stated.

He disclosed that police operatives had immediately launched an investigation following the attack and had intensified intelligence gathering and tactical operations aimed at tracking down the assailants.

“The police have been working on the matter since Sunday night and have intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the attack,” he added.

The commissioner further revealed plans to personally visit the scene of the incident to assess the security situation and coordinate fresh strategies with security personnel to prevent future attacks.

Security analysts say the attack highlights the dangers faced daily by law enforcement officers battling criminal elements across the country. They have urged stronger collaboration between local communities and security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and response capabilities.

Meanwhile, residents of communities along the affected road have expressed growing fears over their safety, with many calling for increased security patrols and the establishment of more security checkpoints in vulnerable areas.

In response to the incident, CP Orutugu also issued a public safety advisory, urging motorists and road users to remain vigilant while travelling, especially at night.

He warned members of the public against stopping at suspicious checkpoints not clearly identified as official police formations.

“Whenever you approach a checkpoint without police vehicles or clear police identification, you should exercise caution. Either turn back and alert the nearest police formation or immediately contact the police for assistance,” he cautioned.

As investigations continue, the tragic deaths of the two officers have added to concerns over recurring attacks on security personnel in the region. Residents and stakeholders are now looking to security agencies for swift action to ensure those behind the deadly ambush are brought to justice and to restore public confidence in the safety of the area.

The identities of the slain officers had not been officially released as of the time of filing this report.
