A decade after his passing, Nigeria is set to honour one of its greatest football icons, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, with a lasting tribute that cements his place in the nation's sporting and diplomatic history.

The Federal Government, in collaboration with renowned businessman and Air Peace Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, will immortalise the late former Super Eagles captain and coach, Stephen Keshi, by inducting him into the prestigious Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame.

The recognition comes ten years after the death of the celebrated football legend, whose remarkable achievements as a player, captain, coach and ambassador of Nigerian football continue to inspire generations across Africa and beyond.

The announcement was made by former Super Eagles captain and respected sports administrator, Segun Odegbami, during a memorial lecture held in honour of Keshi in Lagos.

According to Odegbami, Keshi's name will officially be inscribed on the national monument on July 28, 2026, exactly one day before the 10th anniversary of his burial. The event is expected to attract top government officials, sports administrators, former football stars, diplomats and admirers of the late football icon.

The NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame was established as a national monument to celebrate and preserve the legacies of Nigerians whose achievements in sports have significantly contributed to advancing the country's image, foreign relations and diplomatic interests on the global stage.

Located within the premises of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, the monument was erected three years ago with sponsorship support from Allen Onyema and .

Speaking on the decision to honour Keshi, Odegbami described the former defender as one of the most influential figures in the history of African football.

"The existing list will now be extended to include the name of former Nigerian Green Eagles captain and national team coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, CON. He has been considered worthy, and his contributions identified, justified and approved by the NIIA," Odegbami stated.

He noted that Keshi's impact extended far beyond the football pitch. As a trailblazer, he opened doors for many African footballers seeking professional careers in Europe and served as an outstanding ambassador for Nigeria throughout his playing and coaching career.

Keshi remains one of the few football figures in African history to have achieved success at the highest level both as a player and a coach. As captain of Nigeria's national team, he lifted the coveted Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 1994, leading a golden generation of Nigerian football stars to continental glory.

Nearly two decades later, he repeated the feat from the dugout, guiding the Super Eagles to victory at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and restoring Nigeria's dominance on the continent.

His coaching accomplishments extended beyond Nigeria. Keshi made history by leading the Togolese national team to its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance at the 2006 tournament in Germany, a feat that remains one of the greatest achievements in Togo's football history.

He also steered Nigeria to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where the Super Eagles reached the Round of 16, earning praise for their spirited performances.

Popularly known as the "Big Boss," Keshi was widely respected for his leadership qualities, tactical intelligence and unwavering belief in homegrown African talent. His contributions earned him the prestigious CAF Coach of the Year award on two occasions—in 2005 and again in 2013.

Born in Lagos and raised in Delta State, Keshi enjoyed a distinguished club career that included a successful spell with Belgian giants R.S.C. Anderlecht, becoming one of the first Nigerian players to establish himself in European football.

The football icon died on June 7, 2016, in Benin City, Edo State, at the age of 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was laid to rest on July 29, 2016, in his hometown of Illah, Delta State.

Ten years later, his legacy continues to resonate across Nigeria, Africa and the global football community. The decision to immortalise him on the NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame serves as a testament to a life dedicated to excellence, patriotism and the use of sport as a bridge between nations.
