Real Madrid Opens Presidential Election Race as Florentino Perez Seeks Another Term
Glintnews Sport 14 May 2026
Real Madrid have officially launched the process for the club’s presidential elections, setting the stage for another potentially historic chapter in the leadership of one of football’s biggest institutions.
The Spanish giants confirmed on Thursday that the electoral process has now commenced after long-serving president Florentino Perez formally announced his intention to contest the election once again.
According to an official statement released by the club, interested candidates have until May 23 to submit their applications for the presidency. However, the strict conditions attached to running for the role make it one of the most demanding positions in world football administration.
To qualify, candidates must have been official members of the club for at least 20 years and provide a financial guarantee of €187 million — approximately $219 million — representing 15 percent of the club’s annual budget. The amount must also be personally backed by the candidate’s assets, a requirement that significantly limits the pool of potential challengers.
Perez, who was re-elected unopposed in January 2025 for another four-year term, remains the overwhelming favourite to continue leading the club. The 79-year-old businessman has dominated Real Madrid’s political landscape for more than two decades and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern football history.
Despite Perez’s strong position, reports in Spain suggest there could finally be opposition in this year’s race. Enrique Riquelme, president of the renewable energy and water company Cox, is reportedly considering launching a bid for the presidency.
In a letter circulated by several Spanish media outlets, Riquelme reportedly requested additional time to prepare a possible candidacy, hinting at growing interest in challenging Perez’s long-standing reign at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Perez, however, appeared unfazed by the prospect of competition.
“When I ran in the 2000 elections, I didn’t ask for more time; I ran and I won,” Perez said during an interview with Spanish television channel La Sexta on Wednesday.
Should more than one candidate officially enter the race, the club’s electoral board will later announce the date and venue for the elections. However, if no rival submits a valid candidacy before the deadline, Perez will automatically retain his position — just as he did in the 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025 elections.
Perez first became president of Real Madrid in 2000, ushering in the famous “Galacticos” era that saw global superstars arrive at the club, transforming Madrid into a commercial and sporting powerhouse. Although he resigned in 2006, he returned to power in 2009 and has since overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Under his leadership, Real Madrid have captured five La Liga titles and an extraordinary six UEFA Champions League trophies, cementing their status as Europe’s dominant force over the past decade.
As the election window remains open, football fans across the world will now watch closely to see whether Perez faces genuine opposition or continues his reign unchallenged at the helm of the 15-time European champions.
