Gunmen Kidnap Four Residents, Kill Vigilante Operative in Midnight Raid on Kubwa Community

Armed gunmen struck again in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the early hours of Thursday, abducting at least four residents and killing a local vigilante member during a violent attack on the Byazhin area of Kubwa in Bwari Area Council.

The latest incident, which occurred around 1:00 a.m., has further heightened fears among residents over the deteriorating security situation in Abuja’s satellite communities, where kidnapping and violent crimes have become increasingly frequent despite repeated calls for stronger security measures.

Eyewitnesses and community sources disclosed that the attackers, believed to be heavily armed, stormed the neighbourhood under the cover of darkness, creating panic as frightened residents scrambled for safety.

According to residents, the assailants moved through parts of the community, targeting homes and forcibly taking away no fewer than four people. During the operation, a member of the local vigilante group reportedly confronted the gunmen in an attempt to stop the abductions and protect residents.

The brave effort, however, ended tragically as the vigilante operative was shot dead by the attackers.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of both the abducted victims and the slain vigilante member had not been officially disclosed.

The attack has sent shockwaves across the community, with many residents expressing concerns that criminal gangs are becoming increasingly emboldened and sophisticated in their operations.

Several residents lamented that communities around Kubwa and Bwari have repeatedly come under attack from kidnappers who appear to operate with little resistance, often targeting vulnerable neighbourhoods during late-night raids.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the FCT Police Command proved unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, did not respond to calls seeking comments on the incident.

The latest abduction is only the newest chapter in a troubling wave of insecurity that has gripped parts of the nation’s capital and its surrounding settlements.

Just days earlier, armed bandits reportedly invaded the Paze community in the Kubwa axis of Bwari Area Council, abducting a resident in what witnesses described as a carefully coordinated operation.

According to local sources, the attackers invaded the Kungabokun neighbourhood at about 11:00 p.m., bypassing local vigilante checkpoints before surrounding the residence of their target.

Residents recounted how the gunmen used heavy objects to smash windows and force entry into the building before successfully whisking away their victim.

In another frightening development, residents disclosed that armed criminals recently moved from house to house in parts of Kubwa between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., attempting to force entry into homes while threatening occupants with death if they refused to open their doors.

One resident revealed that the attackers had initially assembled in an uncompleted building opposite his residence before launching their operation across the community.

“When they couldn't gain access to my house, they moved to other compounds and eventually succeeded in abducting some residents,” the source said.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that the Bwari Area Council, particularly the Kubwa, Ushafa and Mpape corridors, is increasingly becoming a hotspot for organised kidnapping syndicates.

Analysts believe many of these criminal groups have established operational bases within the rugged forests and hilly terrains stretching toward neighbouring Kaduna and Niger states, allowing them to launch attacks and retreat with relative ease.

The persistent attacks have left residents living in fear, with many demanding urgent intervention from security agencies and the Federal Government.

Community leaders are calling for increased deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, enhanced surveillance operations, and sustained patrols across vulnerable communities to stem the growing menace.
