Nigerian Police Warn Against Retaliation Amid South African Anti-Migrant Tensions

Nigerian law enforcement officials have cautioned the public against launching retaliatory attacks on South African citizens or commercial interests operating within the country. The warning follows a surge in anti-immigration demonstrations across South Africa.

Authorities implored citizens to refrain from vigilantism following unverified accounts of violence directed at Nigerians living in South Africa. While no such incidents have been officially documented, the proactive advisory was issued on the heels of a high-level briefing among security and intelligence heads.

Furthermore, South African police have yet to substantiate any targeted violence against expatriates, though administration officials have publicly denounced recent lawlessness aimed at foreign populations.

Friction has been building in South Africa over the past few weeks, fueled by public protests demanding more stringent measures against undocumented immigrants. In response, several African governments have instructed their citizens abroad to stay alert. Ghana recently went a step further, repatriating hundreds of its nationals due to mounting security risks.

"We acknowledge the distress and outrage sparked by recent reports of violence against Nigerians overseas," Aliyu Giwa, a senior police spokesperson, stated via social media platform X.

"As an agency sworn to safeguard Nigerian lives, we are acutely aware of these anxieties," Giwa remarked. "Even so, this moment demands level-headedness and moderation." He emphasized that turning to violence would fail to secure Nigerians abroad and would instead trigger further domestic instability.
