Terror Strikes Again in Kwara: Gunmen Abduct Primary School Teacher on Way to Work as Residents Decry Security Vacuum

Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of Eruku and surrounding communities in Kwara State following the abduction of a primary school teacher by suspected terrorists along the notorious Obbo-Ile–Eruku Road.

The victim, identified as Shina Adeoye, a teacher at Cooperative Primary School, Eruku, was reportedly kidnapped on Thursday morning while travelling to his workplace, sparking fresh concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the area.

According to community sources, Adeoye was intercepted by armed men suspected to be terrorists while commuting between Obbo-Ile and Eruku in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state. The attackers allegedly whisked him away to an unknown destination, leaving residents in shock and fear.

As of the time of this report, the teacher's whereabouts remain unknown, while efforts to secure his release are ongoing.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent insecurity along the Obbo-Ile–Eruku corridor, a route residents say has become increasingly dangerous due to the activities of armed criminal groups.

A resident of Eruku, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns, described the abduction as a devastating blow to the community.

"We woke up to the shocking news that Mr Adeoye had been kidnapped on his way to work. He is a respected teacher and a well-known member of this community. Everyone is worried because nobody knows where he has been taken," the resident said.

The source lamented what he described as the lack of adequate security presence along the road despite repeated appeals by community members for government intervention.

"This road has become a nightmare for commuters. People now travel in fear because there is hardly any visible security patrol along the axis. We have raised concerns repeatedly, but the situation remains unchanged. Criminals seem to be operating freely," he added.

Residents expressed fears that the worsening security situation could have serious implications for education, farming, commerce, and daily life in the affected communities.

Another community member noted that the kidnapping of a teacher on his way to work highlights the growing vulnerability of ordinary citizens.

"This is a teacher whose only mission was to educate children. If teachers, farmers, traders, and other law-abiding residents can no longer move freely without fear of being kidnapped, then our communities are facing a serious security crisis," the source said.

The latest incident has reignited calls for urgent government action to secure communities within the area and protect residents from recurring attacks by armed groups.

Community leaders and residents are appealing to both the Kwara State Government and federal security agencies to deploy more personnel, establish permanent security checkpoints, and intensify surveillance operations along the Obbo-Ile–Eruku Road and other vulnerable routes.

The kidnapping comes against the backdrop of previous violent attacks that have rocked Eruku and nearby communities.

In November 2025, suspected terrorists launched a deadly attack on Eruku, leaving at least two people dead and another injured. Among the victims was a worshipper at a Christ Apostolic Church parish, identified as Mr Aderemi, who was shot during the attack. Another victim, Mr Tunde Asaba Ajayi, was later discovered dead in a nearby bush.

At the time, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, describing it as an attempted bandit attack. Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi stated that officers from the Eruku Division, working alongside local vigilante groups, responded swiftly after receiving reports of gunfire on the outskirts of the town.

According to the police, the security operatives engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat into surrounding bushes. However, the attack left behind casualties and further heightened fears among residents already struggling with insecurity.

With the latest abduction of a schoolteacher, many residents believe criminal groups are becoming increasingly emboldened, taking advantage of perceived security gaps to target vulnerable members of society.

As anxiety grows within the community, residents are hoping for the safe return of Adeoye while urging authorities to take decisive action to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among citizens living in the area
