Tragedy Amid Triumph: Two Children Killed as Military Operation Rescues 360 Kidnap Victims in Borno

June 8, 2027

A major counterterrorism operation in Borno State has resulted in the rescue of 360 kidnap victims from terrorist captivity, but the mission was marred by the tragic deaths of two children during the military raid.

The Borno State Government confirmed the development on Monday, describing the operation as one of the most significant breakthroughs in recent efforts to combat insurgency and mass abductions in Nigeria's North-East region.

Speaking during a live appearance on Channels Television's The Morning Brief, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, revealed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai successfully carried out the rescue mission after acting on credible intelligence provided by the Department of State Services (DSS) and military intelligence operatives.

According to Tar, the operation targeted a terrorist hideout where hundreds of abducted persons from Ngoshe and surrounding communities had been held captive.

"Acting on credible intelligence from the Directorate of State Services and military intelligence, officers and men of Operation Hadin Kai carried out a daring operation that led to the release of 360 victims of the Ngoshe kidnapping," he said.

The commissioner praised the professionalism and bravery of the troops involved, noting that the operation dealt a significant blow to terrorist elements operating within the Lake Chad Basin and the Sambisa Forest axis.

However, he disclosed that the mission came at a painful cost, as two children lost their lives during the rescue effort. While details surrounding the circumstances of their deaths were not immediately provided, the incident has highlighted the difficult and often dangerous nature of military operations aimed at rescuing civilians from heavily armed insurgent groups.

Security experts have described the rescue as a remarkable achievement given the complexity of operations in areas long controlled by terrorist factions. The North-East has endured years of attacks, kidnappings, killings, and destruction attributed largely to insurgent groups operating in remote forested and border communities.

The successful extraction of 360 captives represents one of the largest rescue operations recorded in recent months and offers renewed hope to families whose loved ones remain in terrorist captivity.

Despite notable military gains over the years, insurgent attacks continue to pose serious security challenges across parts of Borno and neighbouring states. Rural communities remain vulnerable to raids, while mass abductions have persisted as a tactic used by terrorists to spread fear and exert influence.

The Borno State Government reiterated the importance of intelligence gathering and community cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Authorities stressed that the latest success was made possible through effective collaboration between intelligence agencies, military personnel, and local sources who provided critical information.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to provide immediate support to the rescued victims. Government officials disclosed that survivors are undergoing comprehensive medical examinations, psychological assessments, and trauma counselling to help them recover from the ordeal of prolonged captivity.

Rehabilitation and reintegration programmes have also been activated to assist the victims in returning to normal life and reconnecting with their families and communities.

Residents across Borno State have welcomed the rescue operation, with many describing it as a major morale boost in the ongoing battle against insurgency. Nevertheless, concerns remain about the emotional and psychological scars carried by survivors, particularly children and vulnerable individuals who spent extended periods in terrorist custody.

As security forces continue operations against terrorist enclaves in the region, authorities have pledged to sustain pressure on insurgent groups while strengthening measures to prevent future abductions and attacks.

The rescue of 360 victims stands as a powerful reminder of both the progress being made in the fight against terrorism and the heavy human cost that continues to accompany efforts to restore peace and security in Nigeria's North-East.
