Tragedy in Kogi: Bandits Kill NSCDC Officer, Abduct Daughter in Fresh Wave of Insecurity
June 9, 2026
Residents of Odo-Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, have been thrown into mourning following a deadly bandit attack that claimed the life of a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and led to the abduction of his daughter.
The victim, popularly identified as Mr. Ayo, was reportedly attacked by heavily armed gunmen who stormed the community in a fresh wave of violence that has heightened fears among residents already grappling with growing insecurity in the area.
According to local sources, the assailants invaded the community and opened fire, causing panic as residents fled for safety. Mr. Ayo was said to have sustained severe gunshot injuries during the attack. Despite efforts to save his life, the NSCDC officer later succumbed to his wounds.
In a heartbreaking twist, the gunmen reportedly abducted his first daughter before escaping into a nearby forest, leaving the family and the entire community devastated.
The tragic incident has once again underscored the worsening security challenges confronting several communities across Kogi State, particularly in areas bordering forests that have become hideouts for criminal gangs involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and banditry.
Residents who spoke to journalists expressed deep concern over the recurring attacks, lamenting that many communities have become vulnerable to criminal elements who operate with little resistance.
"We are living in fear. Hardly a week passes without reports of kidnappings or attacks in nearby communities. The government and security agencies must act urgently before the situation gets completely out of control," a resident said.
Community leaders also condemned the attack, describing the killing of the security officer as a painful loss not only to his family but also to the community he served. They appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted daughter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The latest attack adds to a growing list of security incidents that have plagued communities across Kogi and neighboring states in recent months. Cases of abductions for ransom, armed attacks, and violent crimes have continued to raise concerns among citizens who believe stronger security measures are needed to protect lives and property.
Observers note that criminal groups have increasingly targeted rural communities, exploiting difficult terrain and limited security presence to carry out attacks and kidnappings.
As news of Mr. Ayo's death spread across Odo-Ere and surrounding communities, residents gathered to sympathize with the bereaved family while expressing outrage over the persistent insecurity threatening the region.
At the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, residents are urging both state and federal authorities to deploy additional security personnel to vulnerable communities and launch a coordinated operation aimed at rescuing the abducted victim and dismantling criminal networks operating in the area.
The attack serves as another grim reminder of the security challenges facing many parts of Nigeria, where communities continue to call for urgent and decisive action against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
