BREAKING: Rep. Aguocha Urges Tinubu To Halt Nnamdi Kanu’s Prosecution, Warns Ongoing Trial Is Deepening National Tensions
17th November 2025
A fresh political development has emerged as Hon. Obinna Aguocha, member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency, has formally written to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to withdraw the Federal Government’s prosecution of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In the strongly worded letter dated November 17, 2025, Aguocha appealed to the President to exercise the constitutional powers vested in the Attorney-General of the Federation under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the government to discontinue criminal proceedings in the interest of national peace.
According to the lawmaker, Kanu’s prolonged detention and trial have “intensified regional discontent, escalated insecurity, and severely eroded trust in state institutions,” particularly in the South-East. He warned that continuing the prosecution has become counterproductive and now poses a threat to Nigeria’s unity and stability.
Aguocha argued that the widespread insecurity, shrinking economic activities, and persistent unrest plaguing the South-East are inseparably linked to Kanu’s continued incarceration.
He further pointed out what he described as constitutional inconsistencies in the handling of Kanu’s case — including issues surrounding his extraordinary rendition from Kenya and alleged prosecution under repealed laws — insisting that persisting with the trial would amount to endorsing procedural irregularities.
The lawmaker maintained that releasing Kanu would mark a decisive step toward national healing, strengthen inter-ethnic trust, and reinforce Nigeria’s democratic credibility before the international community.
“True leadership is demonstrated when a President rises above the fray to pursue justice, unity, and reconciliation,” Aguocha wrote. “Freeing Nnamdi Kanu at this time will generate nationwide goodwill, calm tensions, and restore citizens’ confidence in the justice system.”
