IPOB Leadership Rejects Reported Life Sentence of Nnamdi Kanu, Announces Emergency Broadcast For Directives

The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly rejected the reported life sentence allegedly handed down to its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing the development as unacceptable and insisting that the group will not recognize the ruling. The response was made public on Thursday,20 November 2025, through a circular posted by Mazi Chinasa Nworu, a key member of the group’s Directorate of State (DOS), on his official X account, formerly known as Twitter.

In the post, Nworu announced that Radio Biafra will host an emergency global broadcast at 7:30 pm Biafra Time (BT) to address members and supporters. He urged listeners across the world to inform family and friends, adding that the broadcast will provide new directives for the movement following the latest court development.

The statement was released shortly after Glintnews reported that Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had allegedly issued a life sentence against Kanu after years of legal battles that have drawn domestic and international attention. IPOB maintains that the case has been riddled with controversies, insisting that the proceedings violate established legal norms and claiming that the trial should not be viewed as legitimate.

With the announcement of the emergency broadcast, many observers believe the group may unveil new operational decisions or internal leadership adjustments. Over the years, Radio Biafra has served as the primary platform through which IPOB communicates with its global audience, and emergency broadcasts often signal significant developments within the movement.

Political analysts say that the latest judicial development has the potential to reshape the dynamics of the agitation in the Southeast. While legal action against Kanu may be seen as a victory for the government, analysts note that his detention has long been a rallying point for supporters and may continue to influence public sentiment regardless of the verdict.

There are also concerns about the broader implications of the situation. Experts argue that the long-standing Biafra question cannot be resolved through the conviction or imprisonment of one individual. They point out that the agitation is tied to decades of political grievances, economic complaints, and sociocultural tensions, many of which remain unresolved. As a result, the question being asked by many Nigerians is whether sentencing Kanu alone can calm the agitation or whether a deeper national dialogue is required.

Communities in the Southeast are closely watching the unfolding events, with many awaiting the outcome of the planned broadcast to understand the next direction IPOB leadership may take. Security agencies are also monitoring the situation, considering the sensitivity of the matter and its potential impact on regional stability.

Glintnews will provide live monitoring of the broadcast and will publish verified updates as new information becomes available.
